Lodiludica - A new play area in Lodi

Via Tortini: A new play zone where there used to be a parking area.

An urban project in collaboration with the associations CLEBA , "Genitori Tosti a Tutti i Costi”, the Primary School "Arcobaleno" and in convention with the Artistic High School Callisto Piazza in Lodi as part of the school/ work experience program of classes 5 A and 5 B together with their Art teacher Ms Teresa Carossa. The translation of the texts into the various languages was carried out by classes 3 and 4L of the Linguistic High School "Maffeo Vegio” Lodi, under the supervision of the language teachers Ms Laura Gobbi, Ms Janet Phillips, Ms Elena Giambattistelli, Ms Cecilia Cundines, Ms Paola Bastia and Ms Catherine Vidali.

In this play area children can play freely letting their imagination run wild.To play Hopscotch you need an object to throw: a pebble, a stick or a bottle top, which is then thrown onto the hopscotch squares.

The images painted on the ground are suitable for playing some traditional games and pastimes, but they can be reinvented or reinterpreted introducing new challenges, around which countless paths can be made. Those same "paths" that connect the different spaces can also be used as tracks for original competitions.

Here are the rules of some of the games:

Hopscotch

Before starting the game, decide who is going first.

During the game, if someone makes a mistake, the next player takes over from where they left off.

Each competitor must throw their pebble onto the path starting from box 1 and hopping on the boxes 1-2-3-6, and jumping on the boxes 4 - 5/ 7 - 8 with your legs apart; then turn around, doing a pirouette, and finally you go back down the path and pick up your pebble.

Then you throw the pebble onto number 2, followed by number 3 and so on until you reach the final number.

The winner is the person who first completes all the boxes with their pebble and completes the set of joined squares without making a mistake.

You can also decide to continue the game by increasing the difficulty, such as throwing the pebble, with your back to the set of squares or being blindfolded, or completing the path with the pebble balanced on one foot, on your head ,... etc.

There are a few  standard rules that are found in many versions played in various countries, the fundamental one is never touch the lines with your feet or your pebble, or not to jump into the boxes in numerical order. Finally, remember to pick your pebble up on the way back without losing your balance or putting your hands on the ground.

Other rules can be agreed between the players, who are also the referees.

 

“Morra Saltata” game

Two players position themselves in the centre of the game back to back and at the start they both jump simultaneously on one of the boxes in front of them.

The goal is to defeat the opponent by choosing a sign that can beat the other, according to the following rules:

-The hammer beats the scissors, so the hammer wins.

-The scissors can cut the paper, so the scissors win.

-The paper wraps the hammer, so the paper wins.

If the two players jump on the same sign, the game is a draw and the players try again.

The game can be repeated several times, so that the player who wins two out of three rounds, or three out of five, wins the game. 

When there are too many people who want to play, you draw lots to establish the pair that begins. Then the loser of the first pair drops out, leaving the place to the next player.

 

Noughts and Crosses

It’s a really simple game!

To play you just use the grid on the ground. It is played by two players taking turns.

Each player, in turn, places a leaf or a pebble in one of the nine squares.

The winner is the first person to get three in a row, also diagonally.

 

Creative-Writing Course

The game consists of 35 numbered boxes and is characterized by 6 different colours.

You need a dice to play this game. Before starting, the players decide which boxes will double the score and which ones, where you have to miss a turn or go back.

The players take it in turns to throw the dice and move their chosen object accordingly and the winner is the one who gets to box 35 throwing the exact number on the dice.

This path game can also be used as a tool for interesting and fun creative writing experiments for adults and children:

The players take turns throwing a dice and the same rules applied, but before starting, different categories are assigned to the various colours, for example:

yellow = animal

orange = person

green = place 

blue = object 

pink = the time 

red = wild card

Example: The first player rolls the dice, if they throw a  4 and land on for example the orange box (animal) they should begin the tale with an animal: "Once upon a time there was a frog....".The second player then throws the dice and gets a  2 and so moves onto the green box (place), " .. who was in Milan in Piazza Duomo...", the third player throws a  5 and moves onto the blue box  (thing) "...and was eating a vanilla ice cream..." and so on. The player who lands on the wild card can choose to add people, things, or any other details to their liking or change roles.

The beauty of the game for everyone will be the "story" that is created thanks to the use of a range of subjects, objects, verbs and adjectives. Depending on the players’ imagination the ordinary can become the extraordinary...

 

Numbers

This game invented by children consists of two side columns both containing numbers from 1 to 10 and a middle column containing the plus, minus,times and division  signs.

You can play alone or compete in pairs or teams.

Rules: you challenge yourself or your opponent by attempting one arithmetical operation at a time starting with addition, continuing with multiplication, then subtraction and finally division. You continue with addition until someone makes a mistake. The first player who gives a wrong answer, loses a point, which goes to their opponent.

The rules for challenging each other with subtraction and division may vary depending on the age of the players.  Children may follow this rule: the number from the first column must be higher than that of the second column; children may try to solve the division with a whole number as a result. In that case, the possible error would only concern division.

 

Maze

The maze is a series of paths where you can play different skill games or traditional hobbies.

You play with a bottle top on a path, players take turns flicking their bottle top while keeping their hand on the ground, trying to move closer towards the exit without going over the perimeter, if that happens the player misses their turn and goes back to the previous starting position.

You can also play in teams; a player from each team must complete the path blindfolded whilst being guided in turns by their team. The aim is always to keep within the perimeter, if your bottle top ends up outside the perimeter you’re eliminated and one of your teammates takes your place. The team that eliminates all players the fastest wins.

 

Pirate

A player has the role of "pirate". The other players move freely in the available space. Before starting the game the pirate shouts: "Pirate commands colour... red " (or any other colour chosen by the pirate).

When players hear this command, they must run away and immediately touch something of that colour. 

Instead of a colour, the pirate can also command objects of a particular shape (for example all round objects, squares, etc.).

The point of the game is to touch the colour and not get caught by the pirate. The person that is caught becomes the new pirate.

 

Blind fly

A player is blindfolded and starts to count while spinning round. Meanwhile, the other players turn around. When the blindfolded player says Stop!, all other players must stop instantly and quietly stay where they are. The blind fly will then point at random and start walking that way.

If the blind fly touches someone, they are caught and the blind fly will have to guess who it is. They are allowed to touch the person’s face with their hands. If they guess correctly, the captured player becomes the blind fly.

Guards and Thieves

Players are divided into guards and thieves; the proportion should be two or three thieves per guard. Before the game begins, the thieves scatter on the islands of the playing area.

When the game begins, the guards positioned in the maze begin chasing the thieves trying to catch them. 

If a thief is touched, the guard who caught them takes them to the ship where the thief will have to wait for another thief to touch and free them.

Two or more imprisoned thieves form a chain holding each other's hands, that way if one of them is freed they can all leave the prison.

Thieves cannot win the game, only the guards can if they manage to imprison all the thieves. After a set amount of time, the roles of the players are reversed and the game restarts.
